The construction of the Orientarium at the Lodz zoo is one of the most interesting investments in the region. It has been talked about for a nice couple of years (work began in 2018), but unfortunately, the pandemic has thwarted the original plans and the work has been delayed. What is the progress of the work? How will the Lodz zoo change this year? What animals will make their home at the Orientarium and when is it scheduled to open? All questions are answered below.

Zoo Łódź now
The Lodz zoo is now operational and open to the public. Unfortunately, due to the works, a large part of the facility has been closed to the public, and many animals have been transported to other zoos. Nevertheless, you can enter the zoo, there are still many enclosures with animals (including some that have already been renovated), but be aware that this is not the zoo we know from before 2018.
Let’s start with the fact that the entrance is not from Konstantinovskaya Street, but from Krzemieniecka Street. You have to go through the gate, buy tickets at the temporary ticket offices and go through the turnstiles. A piece past the entrance, on the left is a mini farm – a place loved by toddlers. Children can walk among the animals and even feed them (beware! only with the provided food and under the supervision of a caretaker!).
From here the zoo tour begins – you can go left or right, but which way you don’t choose first and so you will return under the mini zoo to visit the second part of the garden.
Walking to the left, you will see different species of monkeys, birds, suspect lemurs and sloths – this part is recommended to start with. The second part is larger, with dining facilities, a playground and a rope park. It is here that there are renovated enclosures with lions and tigers, and we will also see here giraffes, baby pandas, kangaroos, camels and many other animals.
At the moment, you have to expect some difficulties – at times it can be noisier from construction work, some paths are muddy.
Orientarium construction
All these inconveniences and difficulties are related to the construction of the Orientarium – a modern part, with large enclosures, attractions, dining and conference facilities. Orientarium will be dedicated to animals and plants from Asia and will be such a Lodz answer to Wroclaw’s Afrykarium;)

We’ve had the opportunity to be at the Orientarium’s construction site twice before and get a sneak peek at the changing spaces. It will definitely be a new quality not only for visitors, but especially for animals.
Large, modern enclosures, combining different species, lots of vegetation, natural lighting. In addition, we learned a lot about the adaptation of animals to new conditions (we immediately note that elephants and other animals that will come here are not caught in the wild!). – about what zoos they will be brought here from, what the whole process of quarantine and getting used to the new place looks like. This is a long and complicated process that cannot be rushed.
The Orientarium will be a building divided into 4 zones, with different themes and animals. The Indian part with elephants promises to be the most interesting. An indoor enclosure, an outdoor enclosure and even a pool with a glass window through which visitors will be able to view the swimming elephants have been prepared for them!
A water zone with a special tunnel where you can admire sharks and stingrays swimming above you will be quite an attraction.
Also available will be the Celebes zone (named after the Indonesian island) with anoa buffalo and macaques, which will have an indoor as well as outdoor enclosure.
The last part will be called Sundaic Islands and will consist of as many as 6 enclosures, and over them will be a footbridge so visitors will be able to view the animals from different perspectives. Here we will see crocodiles, orangutans, gibbons, langurs, binturongs and Malayan bears.
Interestingly, above the heads of visitors, various species of birds will fly freely between the enclosures. The whole will be complemented by several thousand plants, which will add naturalness and freshness to the visiting pavilions.
The whole thing promises to be really impressive, and we’re already looking forward to the completion of the work, the moving of the animals, and the official opening. And when will it take place? It is currently scheduled for September or October this year.

Location and access to the Lodz zoo

You can park your car in a small parking lot at the intersection of Krzemieniecka and Konstantynowska streets or across Krzemieniecka Street, under the Botanical Garden. Places can also be sought under the renovated entrance, but due to construction work the number of places is limited.

Summary
We look to the next few months with high hopes. Construction work is in full swing, but it is important to be aware that even when it is completed we still have to wait for the animals to fully acclimate to the new place.
Currently, the zoo is operating in a truncated capacity. There are definitely fewer animals, and the walking area is smaller. Is it worth coming now? If you have free days during the week then yes – it is quieter and quieter then, on weekends it can be quite crowded, especially when the weather is nice. Prices are quite exorbitant for the reduced available space, but it won’t get cheaper ;) Expect ticket price increases once the Orientarium opens.
We are keeping our fingers firmly crossed for this investment and we can’t wait to invite you to the new Orientarium :)
