Chicago is a city that we have always associated primarily with the Polish community and its famous beans. On our recent trip to the US, this is where we started our Route 66 journey – one of the most legendary routes in the United States. However, we didn’t just want to stand at the sign of the beginning of the road, take a photo and move on, we wanted to see the famous windy city. In this post, we will show you the top attractions of Chicago!
Chicago is where the historic Route 66 – is where the road, which is nearly 4,000 kilometers long and leads all the way to Santa Monica, California, begins. That was the goal for this trip: to drive all the way to the West Coast of the US, to feel the atmosphere of the old towns, to see the differences and multiculturalism, to learn about history, although not that long, since Route 66 was officially opened in 1926. However, inextricably linked to the history of the road is the fate of small local businesses, such as motels and restaurants, which flourished thanks to the increased traffic along the route, but began to decline when faster roads were built and Americans began to choose more comfortable forms of travel.
Our journey began in Chicago. We flew here from Poland, but not directly. We bought a ticket on British Airways because it was cheaper to travel from Warsaw via London, and not much longer. We arrived in the evening, and the next day, in the morning, we set off to explore the city. We chose an overnight stay away from the city because we wanted it to be closer to the RV rental. However, the facility was well connected to the center, which we reached by light rail. We traveled around the center on foot and by public transportation.
Below we have prepared a list of places to see! Here you will find both Chicago’s biggest attractions and lesser-known ones, more for rest and relaxation.

A brief history of Chicago and interesting facts
Chicago, also known as the “Windy City,” was founded in 1833 as a small trading settlement at the mouth of the Chicago River into Lake Michigan, and four years later gained city rights. Previously, the area was inhabited by Native Americans. Thanks to its strategic location, the city quickly became a key transportation hub in the US, especially after the opening of the Illinois-Michigan Canal in 1848, which connected the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River. The city’s dynamic growth also accelerated thanks to the railroad, making Chicago a center of commerce and industry.
In 1871, a major fire consumed much of the city, but the destruction paved the way for spectacular reconstruction, including the creation of modern skyscrapers. It was here that the Home Insurance Building, the world’s first skyscraper, was built in 1885 (we won’t see it again now, it was demolished in 1931). Chicago is also famous for its great cultural diversity – since the 19th century it has attracted immigrants from all over the world, including a large Polish community that still plays a significant role in the life of the city.
Interesting facts about Chicago
- The name “Windy City”(Windy City) comes not only from the wind off Lake Michigan, but also from the reputation of local politicians as “full of hot air.”
- The city has the largest number of movable bridges in America – there are as many as 45! Only Amsterdam has more in the world. You can admire them, for example, while walking along the Chicago River.
- It is the birthplace of deep dish pizza, known around the world as Chicago pizza. In Chicago, it is worth trying it!
- The city has more than 200 theaters, making it one of the largest cultural centers in the US. Among the theaters, one must mention the famous The Chicago Theatre.
- One of the world’s oldest and America’s first planetariums – the Adler Planetarium, opened in 1930 – operates here.
- The Chicago River is an example of a river whose course has been diverted by man to prevent pollution of Lake Michigan.
Polish community in Chicago
It is impossible to describe the history of Chicago without mentioning the Polish community, which played a huge role in shaping the city’s identity. The Polish community in Chicago is one of the largest in the world, and Polish accents can be found in many places. Walking around the city, we often heard Polish and probably many interesting places we could have discovered, if not for the fact that we had limited time on site and, however, focused on the American face of the city :)
Why is it that so many Poles have settled here? A number of factors contributed to this – most notably, the rapid growth of the city in the 19th century, which created a huge demand for labor in industry and construction. As a key transportation hub, Chicago was easily accessible to immigrants who came here in search of better living conditions. In addition, the city offered the opportunity to live in ethnic communities, which facilitated adaptation in a new place. Poles were the most crowded in the early 20th century, when they arrived at Ellis Island by ship and were then driven to Ellis Island, among other places. to Chicago (by the way, we highly recommend you the Emigration Museum in Gdynia, which shows this journey of Poles to the US). Subsequent waves occurred after World War II and in the 1980s.
If you would like to see the most Polish neighborhood in Chicago then head to Jackowo (Avondale).
Attractions in Chicago – what to see
Chicago’s tourist attractions provide something for art lovers, history buffs and families with children alike. Below you will find suggestions for places we think are worth visiting. All are easily accessible, and each has something unique to offer.
Millennium Park and Cloud Gate, or the famous beans
Millennium Park is a must-visit place while in Chicago. We, unfortunately, had little luck, because the famous Cloud Gate, a bean-like mirror sculpture, was just under renovation (or, more accurately, the area around it), so we admired the reflecting skyscrapers only from a distance. However, we know that the work has ended and it is available again. Beans are the main attraction of Chicago for many people! We don’t know if it’s the biggest, but it’s certainly the most distinctive.
You will also find many other interesting art installations and spaces to relax in the park.
Willis Tower and John Hancock Center
The Willis Tower skyscraper, better known as the Sears Tower, is one of the tallest buildings in the United States. Like many other buildings, such as in New York (link!), an observation deck (Skydeck Chicago) has been prepared, and not just any observation deck. Here you can see the city from a height of more than 400 meters and admire Chicago’s architecture from the highest observation deck in the US! The Ledge, or glass balconies, viewing platforms that protrude beyond the body of the building, will provide both excitement and unforgettable views.
If you plan to visit the Willis Tower it is worth booking tickets in advance (link).
Among the skyscrapers, also look out for 875 North Michigan Avenue (this one is also better known by another name: John Hancock Center), 344 meters tall with a distinctive antenna. This facility also provides an observation deck, but here there are windows thattilt outward(TILT)! The John Hancock Center also has the Chicago skyline waiting, of course, and tickets can be purchased online here.
The beginning of Route 66
The symbolic “Begin Route 66” sign is located right in Chicago. It was here that we began our adventure with one of the most iconic routes in the US.
But lest it be too easy, it is worth mentioning that in the city, not far from each other, there are two signs of the beginning of Route 66. One is at the intersection of Adams Street and Michigan Avenue, and another such sign can be found heading west on Adams Street (the beginning of the road has been changed several times).
Chicago Loop
Chicago Loop is a bustling business district, full of impressive skyscrapers and distinctive city trains running on elevated tracks. The Loop is the very name of the loop that the trains travel through the city, and just such a ride can be a unique experience. As you drive, you can admire Chicago’s architecture from a completely different level.
Chicago Riverwalk
The Chicago Riverwalk is a unique promenade that runs along the Chicago River. As you walk, you can admire Chicago’s magnificent architecture, relax in one of the many cafes or restaurants, or take a river cruise. This is the perfect place to relax after a busy city tour. After dark, the Riverwalk gains a special charm from the illumination of buildings and bridges, which creates a magical atmosphere.
Trump Tower
Trump International Hotel & Tower is equally famous and one of the most recognizable buildings in Chicago. Its distinctive silhouette rises above the city, with luxury stores and restaurants on the lower floors. Admittedly, there is no observation deck here, but the view can be enjoyed from Terrace Restaurant 16
Wings of Mexico
Wings of Mexico is a sculpture of wings that symbolize freedom, hope and inspiration. It is designed so that you can take a souvenir photo with the wings. The installation is located in the Plaza of the Americas, on Michigan Avenue.
Museums in Chicago
Museums are very popular attractions in the city. The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry delights with interactive exhibits that will keep both children and adults entertained. The Field Museum is a real treat for natural history buffs – here you’ll find Sue, the best-preserved Tyrannosaurus skeleton in the world.
We can’t help but mention the Adler Planetarium, where you can explore the mysteries of the cosmos; theArt Institute of Chicago, one of the most important art museums in the world, which houses works by Monet, van Gogh and other masters; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, which will be an excellent choice for art lovers. And if you would like to learn more about the history of the city, you can go to theChicago History Museum (Chicago History Museum)
What else is worth seeing?
The above points will quietly suffice for you for a day or two in Chicago, but if you would like to see more we have some additional suggestions. Some are popular attractions and some are places to relax.
Navy Pier
Navy Pier is a place that combines entertainment, culture and beautiful views. There’s an amusement park here with a carousel and Ferris wheel, which of course you might immediately associate with Santa Monica Pier. If you are traveling with children then you may also be interested in the Chicago Children’s Museum located at the entrance to Navy Pier.
The site is worth visiting for one more reason: it offers a panoramic view of the city of Chicago.
Chicago River Cruises
Chicago can also be viewed from river level on a Chicago River cruise. On such a cruise you will pass under numerous bridges, and thanks to dedicated guides you will learn a lot about Chicago’s architecture.
Lincoln Park
Lincoln Park is a vast green area that offers many attractions and where you can simply relax from the hustle and bustle of the city. Here you’ll find the Lincoln Park Zoo, a free zoo perfect for families, as well as beautiful walking paths along Lake Michigan.
Magnificent Mile
It’s a street full of luxury stores, restaurants and hotels, but there’s more to it than that. Walking around you can admire the architecture of Chicago, look out especially for the Water Tower, Pumping Station, Tribune Tower and Wrigley Building.
Grant Park
Grant Park is a huge green space in the center of the city, known as “Chicago’s front yard.” There is the famous Buckingham Fountain and many walking paths. It is the perfect place to relax after a busy tour.
Tribune Tower and Wrigley Building
These two distinctive buildings are true icons of Chicago architecture. Walking in their neighborhood, you can admire the beautiful details of the facades and feel the atmosphere of the city. Both buildings are located on the Magnificent Mile.
Lake Michigan
A visit to Lake Michigan itself is not to be missed. Beaches, bike paths and picnic areas make it an ideal place for family relaxation.

Practical information
Public transportation in Chicago
Getting around Chicago is very convenient thanks to an extensive network of subways (known as the L-Train), trains and buses, managed by the CTA (Chicago Transit Authority). The city has a very well-developed public transportation system, which allows you to conveniently move around the most important tourist spots without the need for a car. The subway and bus system covers most neighborhoods, and using a route planning app makes getting around the city intuitive. A subway ride costs $2.50, while a bus costs $2.35.
You can buy traditional, card-based tickets, you can use a Ventra card for which you have to pay deposits and recharge, or you can simply pay by contactless payment card (including with a smartphone or smartwatch).
All information like schedules, route map, prices, traffic obstructions can be checked on the CTA website.
Car rental in Chicago
While a car may be unnecessary in the city center, it’s worth renting a car if you plan to travel farther afield, such as the Route 66 route or driving further afield. Parking in downtown Chicago is expensive and often limited, making the car a less practical choice.
If you decide to rent a car, we recommend using one of the rental companies located at O’Hare or Midway airport. You can also find attractive deals at rental companies on the outskirts of the city, which often cost less, but are harder to get to.
We did not take a car this time, but rented an RV. We picked him up in the suburbs and then immediately continued our journey.
Recommended Hotels in Chicago
You’ll find a wide range of accommodations in Chicago, from luxury hotels downtown to more affordable options on the outskirts. Our choice was not very obvious, because instead of looking for accommodation close to the center we chose a facility more on the outskirts. More important this time than getting to the city center itself was the airport transfer and getting to the RV rental company.

What else do you need to keep in mind before traveling to Chicago?
Here is some important information to keep in mind before traveling to Chicago and the US in general:
- You don’t need a visa to enter the US in most cases, but you still need an ESTA. Remember to apply for it before you leave, and it is still possible to apply for a visa if ESTA is rejected.
- Internet is quite easily accessible in the US: in any hotel, campground, store or restaurant you will connect for free without any problem. However, if you want to have Internet on the road then it’s worth buying a SIM or eSIM card (we recently bought an eSIM before flying out).
- If you plan to travel in an RV or rent a car, it is worth booking in advance (especially if you are traveling in the so-called high season).
- Book your accommodations in advance, at least the first ones :)
- Buy travel insurance for the US. This is very important, because in many policies the States are excluded and you have to buy a larger package (covering countries like the US or Japan). On top of that, it is important to remember that health care in the US is private so you pay for everything, and not a small amount of money.
- Adapters: European appliances will not plug into American outlets, so be sure to bring the appropriate adapters.

Our opinion – is Chicago worth seeing?
Definitely worth it! Chicago is a city full of contrasts that combines modern architecture, interesting history and a multicultural atmosphere. From famous skyscrapers and picturesque parks to exceptional cuisine and family-friendly infrastructure, there is something for everyone. For us, it was a place that not only provided an interesting experience, but also allowed us to start a great adventure on Route 66. Chicago’s biggest attractions mean there is something for everyone.
Our only regret is that we were here for too short a time. Fortunately, it is possible to fly to Chicago relatively cheaply, so we hope to return here again.
